What are the differences and advantages of active and passive RFID tags

July 16,2021.

RFID technology has been developed in many ways, so RFID has many names and definitions. Different RFID technologies have different ways to power tags and communicate between readers and tags. The basic technology is used as a way to classify RFID, such as passive RFID, active RFID, and chipless RFID. Another method of RFID naming comes from the radio transmission protocol. They are described in the radio protocol standards and are usually referred to by standard names: ISO 15693, ISO 14443-A, ISO 14443-B, ISO 18000-62, ISO 18000-63, GB T/29768...

What are the differences between active and passive RFID tags?

Passive RFID tags have no power source, and the practical range is about 10 cm to several meters. They are activated by electromagnetic waves emitted by the reader, and then send the information back to the RFID reader.

Active RFID tags have a built-in power supply and a microprocessor for special tasks. An active RFID reader can monitor all active tags within 100 meters, and the data transmission range is much longer than that of passive tags.

What are the advantages of passive RFID tags?

If passive asset tag technology is used, its reading speed is four times that of barcodes, and the tag can be detected even if it is not in sight.

What are the advantages of active RFID tags?

When objects are managed by active RFID tags, daily inventory of objects is almost unnecessary. The active RFID tracking solution will automatically start asset inventory in real time based on applicability, business and security requirements. Card readers can be permanently installed in key locations to report the current status of marked assets in designated areas.

Under what circumstances are these two RFID tags used?

Passive RFID tags are commonly used in the retail supply chain to improve inventory tracking and management efficiency. The bank cards, bus cards, and access cards used in our daily lives are all nested RFID tag cards, also known as IC cards.

Active RFID systems use "beacon" tags to periodically communicate their status. Real-time transmission, the marked assets are immediately and continuously identified. If a large-scale real-time tracking is required, the active RFID solution is significantly better than other passive solutions. It has significant advantages in the management of important assets, IT equipment, valuables, mobile and shared resources.
